.Canon Backstory.
Little background is given for Xaldin in the game Kingdom Hearts 2. Only two details are concretely known: that he was an apprentice to Ansem the Wise, and that eventually, he turned on his master. Documents found in the game suggest that he worked in conjunction with Ansem's other apprentices, Even, Braig, Ienzo, Elaeus, and Xehanort, to accomplish this, although he was not himself a major player in the matter. At the time, Xaldin himself was known as Dilan. Upon the disastrous failure of their experiments and becoming a Nobody-- a creature without a heart-- he became the thirdmost senior member of Organization XIII, Xaldin.
As the protagonist, Sora, the player often finds Xaldin's boss battle to be difficult to beat, unless some active degree of strategy is taken. It's not a hack-and-slash fight. Xaldin has a considerable degree of skill in manipulating wind and utilizing his spears (SIX of them!) in inventive ways of completely KO'ing your characters, so one might assume he's rather knowledgeable in the fine art of Kicking Ass; whether these are abilities gained upon his transformation into a Nobody or skills that carry over from his previous life is uncertain.
.AU Backstory.
Xaldin is the only child of an eccentric, roadtrip-happy mechanic who still treats him like he's eight; his father has mostly been a no-show in his life, but that's alright, really. More financial aid for him! He's following in the footsteps of his mother and entering mechanical engineering as a major, although he's still undecided on what his minor ought to be. He's come out of a rocky adolescence admirably held-together, and looks well-set to begin his college career-- a year later than he planned to, admittedly, but better than not going at all. His patchwork childhood has been peppered by long periods of being out of classes, followed by frantic homeschooling to make up for it.
In between extreme sports (his only consistent hobby) and trying to fulfill his illicit dreams of becoming a professional skydiver, Xaldin occasionally has time to wonder whatever happened to the group of friends he used to hang out with in his childhood.
.Physical.
Xaldin's dark hair is rather long; the first few inches of it are cornrowed closely to his scalp, and the rest are set in tightly woven braids. No dread-head here: the braids spill down pretty naturally from the ponytail he usually puts it up into, though their ends do tend to get pretty tatty. He's been growing it out since he was ten, and encounters with hairstylists have been few and far between-- his rather impressive sideburns, though, have a certain shape to them that suggests some kind of personal grooming. In any case, his earlobes are clearly visible, and all he has in terms of jewelry are two loops of silver in each ear.
Xaldin's tan, and the amount of well-defined muscle on him, is a testament to a lifetime spent hauling heavy objects around in the sun: if inquired about whether or not he visits a gym regularly, his response would be polite disbelief. He also isn't short, though from a distance, the bulk of his shoulders might make it seem that way. He isn't quick to smile, but his canines are somewhat pronounced when he does.
His sense of fashion is variable, but there's one accessory he generally keeps with him at all times: his goggles.
